Negotiate Your Rent
We looked at it. The rent was still higher than what I wanted to spend. But boyfriend was in love with it. So we went home to talk it over. Boyfriend said, yes, it was over, but we could negotiate the rent. "Really?" I asked. "It's worth a shot," he replied. Somehow he decided I was better at this kind of thing, so I called. (Wasn't I the one who didn't know you could even do this five minutes ago?)
I was so horrible at it. I wanted to pay $50 less a month, so that's what I told him. He said the lowest he could do was $25 less a month. I told him I'd call him back. For $25 a month, boyfriend was sold. He convinced me it was a minor cost to live in that neighborhood and blah blah blah. And I had just knocked $25 off the price. Might not sound like a lot, but that's $300/year.
Happy ending: we got the place and love it. If I could go back in time, though, I'd ask for $100 off a month. He might have laughed at me, but then when he met me half-way, it would have been at the price point I actually wanted.
